Should Harbhajan be picked for WI Tests?

Fresh from the success of a 5-0 whitewash of England in the ODI series, the BCCI Selection Committee sits across the round table on Friday to deliberate upon the composition of Team India for the Test series against the visiting West Indies team. The hot topic, though, remains should Harbhajan Singh be recalled or should he be grilled in a few matches of the upcoming Ranji season.

Should Harbhajan be picked for WI Tests?

Harbhajan was dropped for the ODI series against England, and his replacement R Ashwin did a remarkable job - along with Ravindra Jadeja - that will put more doubts in the minds of selectors. At the same time, the selectors would want Harbhajan to be in top form for the Australian tour. So they have to take a call on what is the best way to get him back among wickets - in Ranji or in Tests against the Windies.

Harbhajan had a decent outing in the recently concluded Champions Trophy and the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, where he bagged seven and five wickets respectively. It's apparent that skipper MS Dhoni backs India's leading off-spinner, which could have a bearing on selectors' decision. But then, it is also possible that Dhoni - who is the most overworked of Indian cricketers - himself may be rested for the series. In that case, it remains to be seen who the selectors zero in on - Harbhajan or Ashwin.

The injury list, which grew incessantly in England, also included Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khah, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel. While Zaheer is nowhere near fit, Tendulkar and Sehwag could make a comeback. But then again, the question remains shouldn't they, especially Sehwag, prove their fitness in Ranji first in order to avoid another embarrassment. Having said that, Sehwag did play a few matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament and whether that has satisfied the selectors or not is anybody's guess.

Ishant too could make a return to lead the Indian attack alongside Praveen Kumar, with S Sreesanth, Vinay Kumar and Varun Aaron fighting out for the other fast-bowling slots. However, there is no doubt at all that Harbhajan will wait with bated breath to know whether he has done enough to impress the selectors for a comeback into the national team or needs to play for Punjab to get his loop back.
