Sania registers 500th professional win

Sania Mirza of India achieved a rare milestone of 500 wins in her professional career when she partnered Bethanie Mattek to down Jugic-Salkic and Klemenschits 6-4, 6-2 to enter the women’s doubles quarter-final of the Brussels Open tennis championship on Tuesday night, according to information received here.

The win was Sania’s 230th in doubles besides the 270 singles wins, according to her father-cum-coach Imran Mirza. And, interestingly, these statistics do not include the results of mixed doubles, Federation Cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

“It is a special feeling when I was informed of this landmark, and considering the fact that I started my professional career way back in 2002, I think it is a highly satisfying record,” Sania said. The Hyderabad girl, now ranked World No.11 in doubles, needs to move up by one place to get a special entry on basis of being in the top 10 for the 2012 London Olympics later this year.
