Bollywood Musical ‘Bunty Berman Presents to Open Off Broadway

The New Group’s latest world-premiere musical comedy “Bunty Berman Presents…” is slated to begin preview performances in New York City April 10. Directed by Scott Elliott, the founding artistic director of The New Group, the production officially opens May 9 and runs through June 1 in a limited Off-Broadway engagement at Acorn Theatre. “Bunty Berman Presents…” features book and lyrics by Ayub Khan Din, the award-winning writer of “Rafta, Rafta…” and “East is East,” which was adapted into a film, and music by Din and Paul Bogaev, multi-award-winning Broadway director of musicals such as “Bombay Dreams,” “Les Miserables,” and “Cats.” Josh Prince, whose latest work includes “Shrek, The Musical,” is the choreographer of the show.

Set in a 1950s Bollywood studio, with songs inspired by Hollywood’s Golden Age, “Bunty Berman Presents” tells the story of movie producer Bunty Berman and the challenges he faces when Raj, his biggest star and best friend, begins to lose his luster and their new movie bombs at the box office. Bunty must navigate through divas, mobsters and ambitious tea-boys to keep his studio alive. Erick Avari plays the title role, supported by Raja Burrows, Nick Choksi, Katie Chung, Sevan Greene, Andrew Guilarte, Shoba Narayanan, Lyn Philistine, Debargo Sanyal, Pallavi Sastry, Gayton Scott, Lipica Shah, Alok Tewari and Sorab Wadia.
