Bansi (Jaya Bhaduri) is a dancer in Mithal Bai's kotha. One day she dances at Seth Mehtab Singh's house. After her dance he tries to rape Bansi. But Bansi escapes and gets into a bus. In the bus she meets Birju (Amitabh Bachchan). Finding him to be a good person Bansi tells her entire life story. She was a girl named Meera in Khushiram (Yunus Parvez), raised by a person Jeevanlal. Both Bansi-Birju run from door to door for shelter. Finally they marry in their own village but people come to know that Bansi is a prostitute so they are not accepted in village. Khushiram & Mithal bai's men catch them up and beat them and take her back to brothel. Can Bansi ever live a happy and free life? Will Birju be able to win and make bansi free? Will the two lovers meet and live together again?
