Chandramohan Sharma (Shatrughan Sinha) is a honest inspector who admires commissioner Kumar Anand (Sanjeev Kumar). Kumar was in love with Maya (Mala Sinha), but for some reason Maya had asked him to go away from her life. A heart broken Kumar leaves her but cannot forget her. Chandra is unaware of this inspite of being his neighbour and also personally quite close to Kumar. Chandra falls in love with a reporter, Kiran (Reena Roy), a brave lady who dares to publish reports against criminals like P.K. (Kader Khan) in her daily. Many years later, Kumar comes face to face with Maya again. She has become a 'mujra' singer and dancer. He follows her to her house only to find that she is married. Her husband Ghanshyam (Manmohan) is a drunkard and makes her sing and dance to earn money. He was the reason why Maya had asked Kumar to go away from her life. He had raped Maya before forcing her to marry him. Ghanshyam arrives home when Kumar is there and accidentally gets killed. Maya asks Kumar to escape and he does so but Chandra starts suspecting him. Can Chandra catch Kumar and prove him guilty?
